Its similarities to our Cinnamon Roll French Toast Casserole For Brunch have cemented its place as a fan favorite. With a balance of sweet and savory flavors, this casserole caters to a wide range of tastes, making it an instant hit with friends and family alike.

Why This Recipe Works

  • The balance of sweetness from the brown sugar, cinnamon, and maple syrup brings a flavor combination that complements the tender bread, resulting in a decadent taste experience.
  • A well-planned prep and assembly process reduces cooking time to under 30 minutes, allowing you to quickly whip up this casserole for unexpected guests.
  • An inventive streusel topping consisting of cinnamon-spiced nuts, brown sugar, and cold butter creates a crunchy texture that contrasts beautifully with the soft bread.

Key Ingredients

One of the secrets to this recipe’s success lies in the quality of its ingredients, particularly the bread. Day-old brioche or Challah will soak up the sweet syrup much more efficiently than regular white bread. Head over to Epicurious for an exhaustive collection of recipes that cater to your sweet tooth. As a general rule, when using an assortment of spices, opt for ground cinnamon to preserve the texture of your streusel topping.

Yield:
4 Servings

Ingredients

1 cup (200g) brown sugar

1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar

2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, softened

4 large eggs

2 cups (250g) thick slices of day-old bread (preferably Challah or brioche)

1 cup (120g) chopped pecans or walnuts

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cinnamon or cinnamon sticks, for serving (optional)

Directions

1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or butter, setting aside for later use.

2
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the streusel topping ingredients until crumbly. Divide the mixture between two small bowls. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to firm the mixture.

3
In a large bowl, whisk together the syrup ingredients – brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract – until well combined. Set the bowl aside.

4
Dip each bread slice into the syrup mixture, coating both sides evenly, and then arrange the bread slices in the prepared baking dish. You can stack the slices slightly if required.

5
Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the top of the French toast. Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Storage & Reheating

When storing leftovers, allow the casserole to cool completely before refrigerating or freezing. For refrigerated leftovers, reheat in the microwave or oven until heated through. For frozen leftovers, bake in a preheated oven at 300°F (150°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until warmed through.
